Crisis, Contagion and Containment: Contemporary Issues in the Politics of Money and Finance

The 2007-2009 global financial crisis, and ongoing financial stress in Europe and elsewhere, has brought into sharper focus the need to better understand contemporary issues in the politics of money and finance. This is the core task of this course. The course will use a variety of theoretical perspectives to address selected contemporary topics, emphasising both domestic and international explanations. It will draw on cutting edge literature about the politics of money and finance and examine a broad range of cases across developed, emerging, and low-income countries. Some of the empirical topics covered will include: the 2007-2009 crisis in historical perspective, the politics of central banking, the economics and politics of sovereign debt crises, financial crime, sovereign wealth funds, the future of the euro as a rival to the dollar, financial regulation and new alternatives to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), such as regional liquidity arrangements and self-insurance.
